A short Historical outline of Bon religion

The origin of Bon

The Bon pos maintain that Bon originated in the land of Olmo Lungring (‘ol-mo-lung-ring), a part of a larger country called Tazig(rTag-gzigs). ‘Ol symbolize the unborn; Mo the undiminishing; Lung the prophetic words of Tonpa Shenrab (sTon-pa-gshen-rab)the founder of Bon; and Ring his everlasting compassion. Olmo lungring constitutes one third of the existing world and is situated to the west of Tibet. It is described as an eight-petalled lotus under a sky which appears like an eight-spoked wheel. In the center rises Mount Yungdrung Gutseg (gyung-drung-dgu-brtsegs), ‘Pyramid of Nine svastika’ The svastika is the symbol of permanence and indestructibility. The nine svastika piled up represents the nine ways of Bon. At the base of Mount Yungdrung spring four rivers, flowing towards the four cardinal directions.
The mountain is surrounded by temples, cities, and parks. To the south is the palace Barpo Sogye (Bar-po so-brgyad) where Tonpa Shenrab was born. To the west and north are the palaces in which lived the wives and children of Tonpa Shenrab. A temple named Shampo Lhatse (sham-po lha-rtse) is to the east. The complex of places, rivers and parks with Mount Yungdrung in the center constitutes the inner region (Nang-gling) of Olmo lungring. The intermediate region (Bar-gling) consists of twelve cities, four of which are towards the cardinal directions. The third region includes the outer land(mTha’-gling). These three regions are encircled by an ocean and again by a range of snowy mountains. The access to Olmo lungring is gained by the so called arrow way(mDa’-lam). Before his visit to Tibet, Tonpa Shenrab shot an arrow thus creating a passage through the mountain range. 

This very sophisticated description of Olmo Lungring has been tentatively related by some scholars to different geographical locations some see it as a description of Mount Kailash (Mt Ti-se) and the four great rivers that spring from its base; China being the land to the east, India to the south, Orgyen (Odi-yana) to the west and Khotan to the north. To other scholars the description seems to resemble the geography of the Middle East and Persia in the time of Cyrus the Great. To a believing Bon po the question of the geographic identification of Olmo Lungring does not come so much to the foreground as does its zymology which is clearly made use of to indicate the supramandane origin of his religion. Symbolic description which combine history, geography and mythology are well know phenomena in ancient scriptures. The description of the universe with Mount Meru supporting the sky and the four Chief Continents to the four cardinal points and this earth as the southern continent (Jambudvipa) is another similar example

༄༅། །གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་བསྟན་པའི་སྲོལ་ནི། བོན་གྱི་སྟོན་པ་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་རྒྱལ་བ་གཤེན་རབ་མི་བོ་ཀུན་ལས་རྣམ་པར་རྒྱལ་བ་མཆོག་ལས་བྱུང་བ་ཡིན། སྤྱད་ཅིང་ཉམས་སུ་བླངས་པ་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ལུས་ཅན་གྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ལས་སྐྱོབ་པར་བྱེད་ པའི་ཐབས་སུ་གྱུར་པའི་རྣམ་དཀར་གྱི་ཡོན་ཏན་དེ་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་མཚན་ཉིད། གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་སྒྲ་དོན་ནི། སྐྱེ་མེད་དོན་ལས་མི་གཡོ་བས་གཡུ༵ང༌། འགག་མེད་རྟགས་ལས་མི་འགྱུར་བས་དྲུང༵༌། སྐྱེ་འགག་གཉིས་སུ་མེད་པའི་དོན་སྟོན་ཞིང་གདུལ་བྱ་སྐྱོབ་པར་བྱེད་པའི་ན་བོན༵་ཞེས་བྱ།
རིང་ལུགས་ཀྱི་གྲུབ་མཐའི་ལྟ་སྤྱོད་གཙོ་བོ་ནི། མདོ་ལས། ལྟ་བ་ཡས་ཕུབས་ཤིག སྤྱོད་པ་མས་འཛེགས་ཤིག གཞི་སྙིང་རྗེ་ཆེན་པོ་ལ་ལོངས་ཤིག ཐབས་ཕ་རོལ་ཕྱིན་པ་བཅུ་ལ་སྤྱོད་ཅིག ཅེས་པ་ལྟར་ཡིན། དེ་ཡང་ཕྱི་ཀུན་སྤྱོད་ཀྱི་རྣམ་བཞག་སྤང་ལམ་མདོ་དང་བསྟུན་ཞིང༌། ནང་ཉམས་ལེན་གྱི་སྙིང་པོ་སྒྱུར་ལམ་སྔགས་ལ་གནང་བ་དང༌། མཐར་ཐུག་བློ་ཕུགས་ཀྱི་གཏད་སོ་གྲོལ་ལམ་བླ་མེད་རྫོགས་པ་ཆེན་པོར་གཞི་བཅོལ་ནས་མདོ་སྔགས་སེམས་གསུམ་གྱི་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་སྒོར་ཞུགས་པ་ཡིན།
སྟོན་པ་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་ཀྱིས་གསུངས་པའི་བོན་རྣམས་གདུང་འཚོབ་ཆེན་པོ་མུ་ཆོ་ ལྡེམ་དྲུག་སོགས་ཀྱིས་མདོ་འབུམ་རྒྱུད་མཛོད་སྡེ་བཞི་རུ་ཕྱེས་ནས་དེ་དག་སོ་སོ་ལ་དོན་གྱི་དགོངས་འགྲེལ་གྱི་བཀའ་བརྟེན་བརྩམས་ཤིང༌། སློབ་ཚོགས་རིམ་བསྐྱངས་ཀྱིས་སློབ་མ་སོ་སོས་རང་རང་གི་ཡུལ་དུ་བསྟན་པ་རྒྱ་ཆེར་ དར་བར་མཛད།
དམིགས་བསལ་ཞང་ཞུང་གི་མཁས་པ་སྟོང་རྒྱུང་མཐུ་ཆེན་དང༌། བོད་ཀྱི་མཁས་པ་ཤ་རི་དབུ་ཆེན་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་གཞི་ལམ་འབྲས་གསུམ་གྱི་བོན་སྡེ་རྣམས་ཞང་ཞུང་སྨར་གྱི་སྐད་ལས་སྤུ་རྒྱལ་བོད་ཀྱི་སྐད་དུ་བསྒྱུར་ཏེ་མདོ་སྔགས་སེམས་ གསུམ་གྱི་བོན་བསྟན་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་ལ་འཆད་རྩོད་རྩོམ་གསུམ་གྱི་སྒོ་ནས་བོན་གྱི་འཁོར་ལོ་བསྐོར་ཞིང་རྒྱལ་སྲིད་ལུགས་གཉིས་ཟུང་དུ་སྦྲེལ་ཏེ་རྒྱལ་གཤེན་བསྟན་པ་མཉམ་ཆགས་ཀྱིས་རྩ་བ་རྒྱལ་བུའི་བཀའ་ཁྲིམས་བསྩལ་བའི་མདོ་སོགས་ལ་གཞིར་བཟུང་རྒྱལ་ཁྲིམས་གསེར་གྱི་ཐིག་ཤིང་གིས་གཉའ་མནན། བོན་ཁྲིམས་དར་གྱི་མདུད་པས་དམ་དུ་བསྡམས་ནས་བོད་རྗེ་ཐོག་མར་གཉའ་ཁྲི་བཙན་པོ་ ནས་བཟུང་སྟེ་ཆོས་རྒྱལ་ཁྲི་སྲོང་ལྡེའུ་བཙན་བར་བོད་གངས་ཅན་ཞིང་དུ་དར་ཁྱབ་རྒྱ་ཆེར་བྱུང་བ་དང༌། མདོ་སྔགས་སེམས་གསུམ་གྱི་བོན་སྡེ་སོ་སོར་སྤྱད་ཅིང་ཉམས་སུ་བླངས་བའི་མཁས་པ་དང་གྲུབ་པའི་གོ་འཕང་བརྙེས་པའི་སྐྱེས་མཆོག་བསམ་གྱིས་མི་ཁྱབ་པ་ཞིག་ཀྱང་བྱུང༌།
དེ་ནས་ཉམས་གུད་གང་འཚམས་ཕྱིན་རྗེས་སླར་ཡང་བོད་ཡུལ་སྟོད་སྨད་ཀུན་ཏུ་བྲུ་ཞུ་སྤ་རྨེའུ་གཤེན་ཁྱུང་དང་བཅས་པའི་གདན་ས་ཁག་གིས་གཙོས་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་འདུས་ གྲྭའམ་དགོན་སྡེ་བརྒྱ་ཕྲག་དུ་མ་ཚུགས་ཏེ་བོན་མདོ་སྔགས་སེམས་གསུམ་གྱི་གཞུང་ལུགས་ཁག་ལ་རང་དོན་དུ་ཐོས་བསམ་སྒོམ་གསུམ་དང་གཞན་དོན་དུ་འཆད་རྩོད་རྩོམ་གསུམ་སོགས་སྔར་སྲོལ་བཟང་པོ་མ་ཉམས་པར་དར་རྒྱས་སུ་བྱུང་སྟེ་གནས་མུས་སྐབས་སངས་རྒྱས་ བསྟན་པའི་དགྲ་བོ་རྒྱ་ནག་གུང་ཁྲན་ཏང་གིས་དྲག་གནོན་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་མི་ལོ་བཅུ་ཕྲག་གཉིས་ཙམ་རིང་བོད་གངས་ཅན་ཞིང་དུ་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་དགོན་སྡེ་གཅིག་ཀྱང་མ་ལུས་པ་ཤུལ་མེད་དུ་བཏང་ཟིན་ནའང་གཙོ་བོར་ྋགོང་ས་ལྷ་མིའི་རྣམ་འདྲེན་རྒྱལ་དབང་ཐམས་ཅད་མཁྱེན་པ་སྐུ་ཡི་ཕྲེང་བ་བཅུ་བཞི་པ་ཆེན་པོ་མཆོག་ནས་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་བསྟན་པ་འདི་ནི་བོད་གངས་ཅན་ཞིང་གི་ལོ་རྒྱུས་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་ཐབས་མེད་པའི་བོད་ཀྱི་ཐུན་མིན་ཆོས་ལུགས་ཤིག་ཏུ་གཙིགས་འབྱིན་གྱིས་ཐུགས་བརྩེས་རྗེས་འཛིན་གནང་བ་དང༌། ཁྱད་པར་དུ་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་དབུ་ཁྲིད་བླ་ཆེན་ྋསྐྱབས་རྗེ་སྨན་རིའི་ཁྲི་འཛིན་སོ་གསུམ་པ་ལུང་རྟོགས་བསྟན་པའི་ཉི་མ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་མཆོག་དང༌། ྋསྐྱབས་རྗེ་སྨན་རིའི་ཡོངས་འཛིན་སློབ་དཔོན་བསྟན་འཛིན་རྣམ་དག་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་རྣམ་ གཉིས་སོགས་གཞིས་བྱེས་གཉིས་ཀྱི་བོན་བསྟན་འཛིན་པའི་སྐྱེས་མཆོག་ཁྱད་པར་ཅན་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་རྗེའི་བཀའ་དྲིན་དང༌། གཞན་ཡང་མི་ལོ་སྟོང་ཕྲག་དུ་མའི་རིང་ཉམས་གུད་དུ་ཕྱིན་མ་མྱངས་བའི་ཧི་མ་ལ་ཡའི་རི་རྒྱུད་དུ་གནས་པའི་བོན་པོ་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་མཐུན་སྦྱོར་ལེགས་སྦྱར་བཅས་ལ་བརྟེན་ནས་ད་ལྟའི་ཆར་བོད་ཕྱི་ནང་གང་སར་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་དགོན་སྡེ་བརྒྱ་ཕྲག་གསུམ་མ་ཟིན་ཙམ་སླར་གསོ་དང་བཤད་སྒྲུབ་སྒོམ་གསུམ་དར་ཞིང་རྒྱས་བཞིན་པ་ཡིན།
མདོར་ན་སྟོན་པ་རྫོགས་པའི་སངས་རྒྱས་གཤེན་རབ་མི་བོ་ནས་ད་ལྟའི་བར་རྒྱུད་ལུང་མན་ངག་གི་ཟམ་མ་ཆད་ཅིང༌། ཐུགས་རྗེའི་བྱིན་རླབས་ཀྱི་ན་བུན་མ་ཡལ་བར་མདོ་སྔགས་ཟུང་འབྲེལ་ཐེག་ཆེན་གཡུང་དྲུང་བོན་གྱི་བསྟན་པ་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་བོད་གངས་ཅན་པའི་ཕ་ཚ་བུ་རྒྱུད་དང་བཅས་པའི་བགོ་སྐལ་དུ་བཞུགས་བཞིན་ཡོད་པ་བཅས་ཀྱི་ངོ་སྤྲོད་སྙིང་བསྡུས་སུ།།
